I have a structured approach to planning and delivering therapy. I believe this is important to ensuring effective outcomes for my patients and clients. Trust and confidentiality are at the heart of good therapy and this sets the ceiling for a good therapeutic relationship.
My personal style is informal, down to earth and practical. I believe a good sense of humour and a willingness to sometimes take perspective and exercise a salutary approach to our suffering is important to building personal resilience. My experience in a number of senior roles in the public and private health sectors, means that I can combine clinical expertise with practical experience of undertaking challenging management and leadership roles; a real-life factor that many therapists often lack.
Pat Schroeder said "You can't ging your hands and role up your sleaves at the same time".
It's therefore important to combine the core conditions of good therapy - Congruence, Unconditional Positive Regard and Empathy - with a practical commitment to change perspective and alter unhelpful behaviour. This is a central tenant of effective CBT.
I always start the process with a brief informal call, so that we can both do our best to ensure that the interpersonal fit is right. This means that I have a very low drop-out rate and my patients and clients provide good feedback.
Accredited members of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP), are required to undertake regular monthly clinical supervision and complete an annual reaccreditation process, to ensure that they have maintained relevant professional development. This provides the public with quality assurance and helps to ensure that accredited CBT psychotherapists are up to date and working to ethical and professional standards. As a BABCP accredited CBT specialist, I am required to demonstrate these standards.
In addition to a masters degree specialising in applied behavioural analysis, I have post-graduate qualifications and have completed specialist clinical training in the following areas:
