OCD Treatments That Work

Consistent with the published evidence base for the effective treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, we draw on different Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) models to support recovery from OCD related problems. This includes:

The Cognitive Appraisal Model

A well known CBT approach to restructuring patterns of negative, repetitive and catastrophic thinking. The cognitive appraisal model has a wealth of underpinning research and is often applied alongside Exposure and Response Prevention strategies in mainstream CBT.

Metacognitive Therapy

Sometimes shortened to MCT, this approach was developed by Professor Adrian Wells and uses an evidence based cognitive approach to tackle the metacognitive processes responsible for the maintenance of obsessional thinking in OCD and other related anxiety disorders.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Also known as ACT, this “third wave” and popular form of CBT model focuses on the six core ACT processes to support psychological flexibility, in response to OCD related obsessions and rigid patterns of compulsive or avoidant behaviour. ACT helps to unhook from OCD Patterns, rather than challenging or changing the content.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Is frequently promoted as a separate therapeutic approach, however we always integrate ERP into our wider cognitive and behavioural treatment plan. This ensures that our clients receive a specialist and individually customized approach, that integrates leading edge methods into a single treatment plan.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

This is sometimes shortened to DBT and whilst better known for problems with emotional dysregulation and help with personality disorders, it can also be used to effectively support individuals struggling with very high levels of OCD related distress. This is particularly relevant with feelings of anger and disgust.

Inference Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

A relatively new form of CBT specifically developed to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and OCD related problems including  BDD, where there is an increasing evidence base. I-CBT works on the processes of irrational doubt, to help individuals tackle a cognitive process known as Inferential Confusion.

How the OCD Therapy Process Works

We always start with a brief informal call to understand the problem and discuss therapy options. If we are confident that we can help, an initial 60 minute appointment will normally be arranged within one week. The initial appointment is followed up with a written report, including a formal diagnosis, outline of the psychological processes that maintain the OCD and a treatment plan with timescales. OCD therapy plans are customized to the individual’s needs and always draw on evidence based approaches from the field of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy. This will usually include ACT, I-CBT and ERP To book an informal call email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
