My original training was in mental health
nursing, which means that I gained valuable practical experience of working on
the front-line of mental health care. During my 10 year nursing career in the
NHS, I had the opportunity to work in both hospital and community-based mental
health settings, initially as a nurse and then as a qualified therapist with
people experiencing acute and severe and enduring mental health problems. As
well as my front-line experience in the NHS, I completed 10 years in a community
based Mental Health Charity where I developed and managed a new counselling and
psychotherapy service for people with a wide range of mental health problems.
For the past 20 years
I have been running my own private
psychotherapy practice alongside my role as a senior University lecturer
teaching Mental Health professionals advanced skills in Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy and other psychological therapies. My professional and clinical
experience have instilled in me a strong commitment to building a good working
relationship with my clients, accurately assessing their problems, clarifying
their goals and expectations, and working in a collaborative way to ensure each
client gets the most benefit from their therapy.
Over the years, I have developed particular
expertise in CBT and psychotherapy for Depression, Anxiety
Disorders such as Social Anxiety,
Health Anxiety, Panic Disorder as well as Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Worry. I have a professional specialism in traumatic
experiences, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, related to physical and sexual assault/abuse
and road traffic and industrial accidents.
